The long-awaited Green Line of the Jerusalem Light Rail officially opened to passengers today, adding 19 kilometers of new track and 25 stations to the city's growing rapid transit network. Officials estimate the line will serve approximately 200,000 passengers daily, dramatically reducing traffic congestion in the capital.
The Green Line runs from the Hebrew University campus at Mount Scopus through the city center to the new neighborhoods in the southwest, connecting to the existing Red Line at two interchange stations.
Impact on the City
Urban planners say the new line will reshape Jerusalem's development patterns, encouraging denser, transit-oriented development along the corridor. Several mixed-use developments are already planned near new stations.
The total cost of the project came to NIS 16 billion ($4.4 billion), completed roughly on schedule after 6 years of construction.
