Sorek C Desalination Plant Breaks Ground in Largest Water Project
Sponsored
Construction has officially begun on the Sorek C desalination facility, set to become the world's largest seawater desalination plant upon completion. Located south of Ashdod on Israel's Mediterranean coast, the facility will produce 300 million cubic meters of fresh water annually — enough to supply over 2 million people.
The $1.5 billion project represents the next evolution in Israel's world-leading desalination technology, incorporating new energy recovery systems that reduce power consumption by 25% compared to current-generation plants.
Water Security
Israel currently derives over 80% of its domestic water from desalination, making it the global leader in this technology. Sorek C will push this capacity further, providing a critical buffer against the effects of climate change on natural water sources.
The plant is expected to be fully operational by 2029.
